Reader’s Note: These are EXCERPTS from Joanne Swift’s Journal for October 15th (Sunday) morning. Donald Johnson, his girlfriend and her kids have arrived to offer ‘help’ after Tom called him.
“Look,” Tom didn’t like Donald all that much, but he was a compassionate and understanding man, “I called you when I wasn’t sure what was going to happen here. I realize now that you came all this way to offer to help, and I appreciate that.”
Tom’s voice was parched when he made that admission – as if struggling to explain himself. It seemed unusual because Tom was so well spoken. “I was in a state of shock about Joanne. I know how this looks walking in here like this now as well and I am sorry.”
His apology was more to Tammy and her family then to Donald. I can’t really describe the look on Tammy and Becky’s faces because I didn’t dare look up from the floor at them most of the time but from their tones of voice –they were not sure how to react to walking into a room full of naked girls standing in various submission positions and that was completely understandable.
“Thank you, Tommy,” Donald said glibly, as if he were finally receiving some recognition he deserved. “I would like to think you and I are family, since we share a wife. We share a son and that connects us. If you ever need me, I’m there for you, just like if I ever needed you then I know you’d be there for me.”
Tom didn’t like being called ‘Tommy,’ and it showed on his face – but Donald seemed oblivious to Tom’s nonverbal cues.
“Yes, well the thing is...” Tom started to say.
“Say no more, I completely understand!” Donald interrupted. “You’re embarrassed to ask for help. I get that – but don’t be. We’re here for you. I get that you do things a little different, and the nudity is going to take some getting used to around here. But if you think that helps your girls sort things out, then who am I to tell you how to parent? You’re raising my son as your own, after all. You get to take him to ball games, teach him to fish – all the stuff I would have liked to have done,” Donald said.
“That isn’t what I was trying to say, Don,” Tom cut off Donald before he could continue his line of thought. “I can see that your family is uncomfortable with the nudity, and while I appreciate the offer of help, I can’t help but think that I was premature in asking you to come out here,” Tom said finally.
I knew that what Donald was saying about us being family and him being there for Tom was total bullshit. Donald was a master bullshit artist, and I actually thought he was better at bullshitting because it seemed fairly obvious he was trying to solicit an emotional response from Tom. I knew Tom was skeptical but he also felt guilty about Donald coming all this way for nothing – and that probably bought Donald a little of Tom’s patience with him.
“You hear that, honey? He called us family,” Donald said. He heard what he wanted to hear just then. Tammy looked angry to just be standing in our living room with these naked women, and folded her arms. Her daughter was lost on the phone, and Billy was trying to get a better look at my daughters without making it super-obvious that he was staring.
“I’m not trying to say that, exactly,” Tom said.
Donald looked hurt – as if Tom were implying he wasn’t family.
“I mean, you are family in the way that you just said,” Tom stuttered slightly. Tom is a very well-spoken man, but he seemed to be wrestling with the right way to tell Donald to go home. “I’m just having a hard time understanding why you want to stay,” he finally said.
“Is it that obvious, Tommy?” Donald said, as he looked down at his white alligator shoes again.
“It’s Tom, actually,” Tom corrected.
“Oh, I’m sorry. You named my son Donny, so I thought you liked going by Tommy,” Donald replied, and shrugged that it had been an innocent mistake to call him Tommy. “I guess you’re right, though. I’ve been such a bad influence and failed to participate in Donny’s life – why would I want to stay now and help. Am I right?”
“That isn’t what I am saying at all, it’s just you turned down the money to turn this into a vacation and...” Tom started to explain.
“That’s just it, isn’t it?” Donald seemed to be agreeing with Tom’s point. “I’ve put money before family so many times that no one can understand why I’d suddenly want to help.”
“I’m not trying to say that at all,” Tom backpedaled. It did seem strange to me Donald wouldn’t take money and leave – but I wasn’t permitted to talk.
“You’re a smart cookie, Tom Swift.” Donald looked Tom right in the eye with a respectful grin. “You figured me out, and I have to say that a past taking advantage of friends and family’s generosity has caught up to me.”
Tom looked beside himself – he hadn’t suggested that at all.
“The car did break down a few miles back, but that tow truck wasn’t taking it to a repair place,” Donald admitted.
Tammy looked pissed at Donald as he revealed the whole story.
“Damn Lowjack gets installed on all the new cars now, and repo men can find you in every state.”
“Oh, well, I can help you get another car, if that’s what...” Tom started to suggest.
“I can’t ask you to do that after you’ve been so nice to welcome me as family into your home, and frankly we need a little more than that,” Donald said.
“How much more?” Tom asked cautiously.
“Tom, your money is no good with me, we can’t accept handouts!” Donald suggested. Tammy looked at him angrily as if he SHOULD take Tom’s money, and right now. Her son was staring at the boobs in the room, and her daughter was tapping angrily on her phone; neither seemed to be paying attention to Donald.
“This would be a loan. You could pay me back,” Tom said, and started to reach for his checkbook to write him another check. “I feel bad that I asked you to drive your car across country. That was my mistake.”
“A mistake?” Donald politely stopped Tom from writing his check and said, “You called me up a few days and told me my ex-wife had gone off the deep end and that my son – my biological son – was jerking off in the fridge!”
“Wow, cool!” Billy looked at Donny as if he were awesome. “I’d like to jerk off in the fridge!”
“That isn’t exactly what I said,” Tom clarified.
“Well, what I heard was drop everything and come out here and help! That’s exactly what I did!” Donald clarified, before asking, “Tom, let me ask you one question: what exactly is it you thought I may be able to do for you if I came out here?”
“I don’t know,” Tom was reluctant to say it now. “I was angry and reacting. I guess at the time I thought you may want to take Joanne back – but you have a family now and all that,” Tom answered, and looked embarrassed to have even suggested it.
I wasn’t sure if my asshole puckered or not – but my throat became parched at Tom’s admission.
“Kind of like a Christmas gift you got that you no longer want,” Donald said. He looked understanding, but as if he didn’t agree with it. “You just re-gift it back to the guy who gave it to you and hope he deals with it?” Donald asked rhetorically.
“You’re right, that is crazy, and I didn’t mean to disrespect your girlfriend. I was in a state of shock with Joanne at the time and I don’t even know what I was thinking. I feel awful – let me make this right,” Tom offered generously.
I didn’t feel any better about it but what hurt worse was no one – not even Donny told him how insane it was to ‘give me back’ to my ex-husband. They all stood there looking at the Johnsons and the Johnsons looking back at us.
“Not at all Tommy, I’m actually flattered that you thought I could do something you couldn’t do,” Donald said. “The great Tom Swift needs old Donald Johnson! I dropped everything and drove across the country to get here to do it for you, man. Hell, I’d take her if I could...”
That didn’t make me feel any better to be talked about like a burdensome gift that he wanted but couldn’t accept. I tried not to look up at the men talking about me as if I were an object that could be passed around.
Tammy shot daggers with her eyes at Donald when he said he would take me if he could. Her daughter Becky even looked up from her phone for a moment to offer him a glare before returning to Instagram.
Even Taylor had not been that into her phone on most occaisons.
“We could take the daughters too,” Billy smiled hopefully, but Donald and Tom both ignored him, as he was obviously wishful thinking and in shock at the possibilities presented by having two naked girls in his home.
“Thing is, Tommy,” Donald apologized and corrected himself, “sorry, it’s a habit. I guess you’d spank me too for forgetting.”
“No, I wouldn’t; please continue” Tom assured him.
“Well, that’s good to know,” Donald said a wry grin on his face as he looked down at Tom. He stood a full head taller than Tom, although he was lanky and not at all imposing physically. “The thing is, we don’t have a home to go back to.”
Tammy’s jaw dropped open, and Becky stopped tapping on her phone for long enough to acknowledge a seething rage building inside of her towards Donald.
“You see, in Obama’s America, there just hasn’t been a lot of opportunity for a guy like me. I used to sell pagers, and then I went on to sell fax machines, and then I went on to sell timeshares, and you see where I’m going with this?” Donald asked, before continuing, “That’s right – I’m a sales guy, but I keep getting the short end of the stick, and the supply I have doesn’t keep its demand.”
The look on Tom’s face told me that wasn’t his takeaway from Donald’s story. I think Tom wanted to say “It sounds like you have always backed losers” but he was being tactful in his choice of words– after all, Donald had just driven across several states at his request.
“We JUST got evicted a few months ago, and it has taken all my time and effort to keep the busybody landlord from kicking us out,” Donald admitted.
“You said that the landlord had been paid!” Tammy crossed her arms angrily.
“The landlord was paid! Just not with a check that had sufficient funds,” Donald offered as an excuse, as Tammy laid into him.
“You said you had money in your 401(k)!” Tammy raised her voice.
“I did have money in my 401(k), but that money has long since been gone, and so I couldn’t use that,” Donald answered carefully, as if that were a perfectly valid excuse.
“You said this was a family vacation! That everything would be fine when we get back!” Tammy looked angry and at the same time was starting to cry.
“And it will, sugar buns,” Donald tried to calm his girlfriend. “Didn’t you hear Tom? He said we’re all family, and family helps each other! Once we go back, everything WILL be fine,” Donald promised Tammy.
“I didn’t actually say we were family, I just agreed with you when you said it,” Tom tried to sound blunt.
“So are you saying we’re NOT family, Tom?” Donald looked at Tom as if he were trying to make sure he really meant that.
“So you need a car, and a place to stay until you get a job, and then you can return back to Indiana?” Tom let the matter of who said what about family drop. “How about I help you guys get a motel for this evening, and then tomorrow we can talk about your résumé and see if I know anyone...”
“I appreciate the offer, but you’re treating me like some charity case here, and we came all this way to help YOU,” Donald insisted.
“What’s it going to take to get you back on your feet?” Tom lifted his checkbook back off the table so that Donald couldn’t stop him from writing a check. “I can probably go double what I was going to give you for a vacation...” Tom offered as he wrote out the check quickly.
It was all of the cash in his checking account – about 5,000 dollars.
Tammy brightened and looked at Donald expectantly.
“It would probably take about 20,000 dollars just to get me to break-even with my landlord, the banks, the credit card companies, and that’s just to get to zero balance. We’ve got braces for Becky and the cell phone plans and then the first and last deposit for the landlord. I just can’t ask for that much, Tommy!”
Tom ignored being called Tommy again, and nodded in understanding.
“Now what you’re offering is a good start,” Donald said as he took the check from Tom’s fingers. “We can stay here and get on our feet, help you with Joanne, and then in a few days we’ll be out of your hair completely.”
Tom looked skeptical and like he wanted to grab back that check, but Donald had already put it in his pocket.
Donald is a master bull-shitter, and he had just managed to talk himself into getting that check AND staying with us in a matter of minutes. I wanted to stand up and tell Donald to go straight to hell and give us the check, but I was so mortified that he saw me naked on the floor that I did nothing.
“Look, we don’t have a lot of space here,” Tom was doing a good job of trying to reason with Donald. “I just have my daughters’ empty rooms, and Bud and Jian are in the larger of the two already.”
“Oh, well, I hate to ask them to move out of that room to make space for FOUR people who don’t have a home to go back too,” Donald suggested, and looked at Bud. “We could move into the smaller room,” Bud said, offering to take Janie’s empty room.
“That would solve the problem,” Donald suggested with a smile. “Then you and Joanne could take the larger of the bedrooms, and the four of us could take the master bedroom,” Donald added.
Tom’s stone face indicated he was clearly not going to do that. He may have been too polite to demand his check back after he wrote it, but he wasn’t moving out of his room. “Joanne sleeps out in the backyard, and we aren’t calling her that anymore.”
“Wow, she sleeps in the backyard? Well, she always did like camping,” Donald chuckled at my misfortune. “No problem, we could take the bedroom and Billy here could sack out on your couch in the living room.”
