“What’s the problem?” he asked in a reasonable voice. The question was aimed at me but Carly answered.

“Lover boy there was eye fucking the maid when I walked in,” she said.

“And that’s your business?” I asked instead of replying to the guy’s question.

“He’s right,” the man said. “That isn’t our business. I apologize and I hope that’s worked out now.”

“That wasn’t the issue,” I spat. “I know you’re protective of Liz and, you might not believe it, but I appreciate it. Yeah, I was looking at the maid’s butt. I don’t have an excuse and I wouldn’t offer you one if I did. It was a cute butt so I looked at it. Big fucking deal. My problem is with what this ... person ... called two little boys that I am very fond of. Oh, and I should add, that her employer is very fond of, as well.”

The man glanced at his wife.

“I asked if they were his children,” she said with a shrug.

“Don’t compound your stupidity by lying about it,” I yelled. The guy stepped between me and his wife with his palms upward. “She asked if they were my little bastards.”

He closed his eyes for a moment and then turned his back to me.

“Why would you say something like that?” he asked in a voice that was just as angry as mine.

“Because she’s an angry, hateful bitch and she’s pissed off that she’s been told to do something she doesn’t want to do,” I provided. “Now get her the fuck out of here! I’ll take a fucking taxi to the hospital.”

He pointed to the woman and then the door.

“Go!” he commanded. She gave him the same sort of look she’d offered me. “I said, Go!”

He watched her leave.

“I’m sorry,” he said turning to me.

“I don’t give a rat’s ass if you’re sorry or not, Pal,” I shot back. He held up his hands again and nodded.

“Can you give me a couple of minutes to deal with her?” he asked in a tired voice. “All I’m asking is for you to stay in the room. But I’ve got to make certain she understands what she’s done and ... it’s best if I do it while I’m still pissed off. I’ll be back and we can do whatever you’ve got planned. OK? Can you offer me that?”

“Yeah,” I said, still trembling. “I’ll stick around. Liz wants me to meet her at the hospital at one.”

“Good enough,” he said. “Thank you and ... I really am sorry. She had no right...”

I held up a hand and he stopped. He gave me a sad smile and left me alone. I looked around the room for something to throw or something alcoholic. It wasn’t quite 11 but I thought I could make an exception. All I found was shit that would have cost me half my savings if I broke it and some lukewarm coffee left over from breakfast.

I walked back to the bedroom, hoping that the half-empty bottle of water from the night before might still be around but Theresa had done a thorough job. The comforter on the bed was even clean and new.

I sat down and rubbed my eyes. I was out of my element and I was out of sync with the people around me. My mere presence was already causing Liz more problems than I knew myself to be worth. It was time for me to go home. I didn’t belong here.

I had just zipped my travel bag when I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a restricted number. I shook my head. I still didn’t have a phone number for Liz.

I sighed and answered it.

“What’s going on up there, Travis?” Liz asked.

“Just stay out of it,” I said.

Liz was quiet for a moment.

“They work for me,” she pointed out.

“Oh, yeah,” I said. “Look, it was ... there is a personality clash with me and the woman. I don’t want her around me. I sure don’t want her around the kids. And don’t even think about trying to move her into my neighborhood.”

“OK,” Liz said. “That’s fine. Sean called Ryan and ... I’m just in the dark here. Ryan is really pissed about something. I just don’t know what. He is sending Brian back to go with you today. I’m just not clear on what happened ... and I think I have a right to know.”

“I’d rather you didn’t know,” I said. “What happened ... happened. I’ve created enough turmoil for you. I ... I think I’m just going back to San Diego today.”

“Now ... wait,” Liz said. I heard her sigh and she grumbled something under her breath. “I need you to hold on for a minute, Travis. I need to speak to Ryan but don’t go anywhere. OK?”

“Yeah,” I said. I heard voices in the background. I recognized Ryan’s voice and I heard another female voice but I didn’t know if it was Stephanie or Jill.

I had no trouble picking out Liz’s voice. It was loud and it was angry.

“Get her the fuck out of there!” she yelled. “I put up with her shit because you wanted a woman on the team. Well, no more, Mister. Put her ass on a plane ... no, fuck that. She can find her own God damned way back home. And you tell Sean he’s free to join her if he says one fucking thing! I’m serious.”

I heard Ryan say something else but it was garbled. The second female voice said something too but I could only make out a couple of words.

“Fine!” Liz finally said. “But you make sure the message gets across. And she leaves today! I mean, the fucking minute you get back there I want her out of there. Do you understand me?”

“Got it,” Ryan said.

I heard Liz’s ragged breath on the line before she spoke.

“Bastards?” she asked me.

“It’s why I didn’t want you involved,” I said. “She was pissed at me. I understand that. When she came in ... shit. The maid was here. OK? She’s young and pretty and I was watching her butt while she vacuumed. She got the wrong impression about me. I was just ... enjoying the view.”

Liz gave a soft laugh.

“It was a nice butt,” I said, hoping to quell Liz’s anger a bit more. “It wasn’t as nice as yours but ... well ... her pants were see-through and she had on striped underwear. I thought she was auditioning to be a backup dancer or something. You know how it is. I’m a typical boy.”

Liz laughed aloud.

“So, she thought because you were looking at another woman’s butt that she had the right to say ... that?” she asked.

“There was a little more to it,” I said. “She didn’t want to deal with me. I think she felt watching me walk around like a dumbass was below her skill level. She’s probably right.”

“I can’t stand her,” Liz said. “She got on my fucking nerves the first time I met her and she just stayed on my nerves. Ryan keeps convincing me to keep her around. I mean, yeah, it’s good to have a woman on the team. I’m not talking about just for diversity sake. I’m talking about logistically. She can check out the restroom and go with me to places a guy can’t. I understood the reason. But, since I don’t like her, I just stopped going to the places she would go with me.”

“They told me last night she has some temper issues,” I said. “I don’t think it’s worth her losing her job over. That’s why I didn’t call you. Well, actually, I didn’t call you because I don’t have a number for you. But I wouldn’t have called you about this even if I did.”

“Shit!” Liz said. “I can’t just read it off to you here. There are people around and Dom is the only security guy with me. Remind me tonight.”

“I still think I should just ... go,” I said.

“If that’s what you want to do ... I won’t chain you to the bed,” Liz told me. “But I’ll tell you that I would rather you didn’t go.”

“I don’t really want to,” I said. “I just think that ... I’ve disrupted things. I sort of thought that I could, you know, just show up and blend in and everyone would go about their business. Now you’re having to make security arrangements for me and changing your personnel because I can’t get along with them. I don’t want to be a distraction to you.”

“You’re not,” Liz said. “Well, you are but in a good way. I’m going to ask you to give it a few days. After the concert, if you want to stay in San Diego ... I won’t put up a fight about it. I’ll still want you with me but I’m not going to force you if you just can’t handle it. But let’s give things a little time to calm down before you make you that call. OK?”

“Yeah,” I said. “How are things at the station?”

“Good,” Liz said absently. “It was the typical canned stuff. Stephanie said you were worried that they might try to ambush me live on the air. It made sense so I was on my guard but it was just the same stuff as always.”

“Don’t let down your guard,” I advised.

“I won’t,” Liz promised. “The label’s PR guy was disappointed that he won’t get the chance to meet you until later.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet,” I said. I rolled my eyes but Liz couldn’t see it. She must have known or caught the tone of my voice because she laughed.

“You’re still coming with me to the hospital, aren’t you?” she asked.

“If you want me to,” I said.

“I do,” Liz said firmly. “And, don’t let what happened bother you. She’s lucky she said that to you and not to me.”

“I called her a few unkind names,” I admitted. “The C word came out but I only meant it exactly as I said it.”

Liz laughed again.

“I’ll see you a little before one,” she said.

“I’m sorry about this,” I told her.

“Don’t be,” she said. “Brian should be there in a couple of minutes. Just hang out with him. Oh, and I forgot. Order anything you want for lunch from room service.”

“I’m good,” I said. “I thought about breaking open the minibar and cleaning out the booze supply but I doubted my credit card could take the hit.”

“You got to work on this ‘kept man’ thing,” Liz told me.

“It’s like Rick always tells Eric,” I said. “I’m with you for your body, not your money.”

It got another honest laugh from Liz. The last thing I wanted was her to go into a live interview angry or with other things on her mind.

“I really...” she began but stopped. “I have to go, I guess. We’re back on the air in two minutes. I’ll see you soon.”

“Give ‘em hell, Kid,” I said.

“I’m gonna,” Liz said with a giggle. “Bye.”

“Bye,” I replied.

Brian actually knocked on the door and waited for me to answer instead of just walking in like he owned the place. I was reaching for the door before it occurred to me that I didn’t own the place either.

I heard loud voices coming from next door when I let Brian in. He pointed to the other room and circled his finger around his temple in the universal sign for crazy.

“I hear you and Psycho-Bitch got off to a bad start,” he said with a laugh after I’d closed the door. “Well, welcome to the club!”

“Psycho-bitch?” I asked.

“That’s what we call her,” Brian said. “She’s ... a hard case. I was going to warn you before you took them down with you tomorrow. I didn’t know until we were on our way to the station this morning that the plans had changed and she was going with you today. What happened?”

I held up my hands and shook my head.

“It doesn’t matter,” I said. “I’ll take my share of the blame but ... well, there are things that can’t be forgiven. She did one of those things and ... I won’t forgive her.”

“Good enough for me,” he said. “Are you ready?”

“I want to finish listening to Liz’s interview,” I said.

We hadn’t even managed to sit down before Theresa opened the door and came in. Once again, she stopped in her tracks.

“My apologies, Theresa,” I said in Spanish. “I’m sorry that you had to hear us screaming at each other.”

She shrugged.

“I have heard worse,” she replied. “The people that stay here are not always ... pleasant. I have had them speak to me in harsh tones ... and I have never called a child I don’t know a name like that.”
