“Aldo. Bring my guest food and drink.” Kara commanded the young man that brought me to her. “And see that we are not disturbed.”

Aldo ran to the main fire and returned with a wooden ‘bowl’ of stew with a shell to eat with and a cup of warm liquid that tasted like some kind of boiled root. I tried to strike up a conversation while I ate, but Kara just told me we would talk after I finished eating. The way she watched me until I was done was creepy.

“Ahn-dee. My people will be departing before the sun is high. There is one that will not be leaving with us due to his injuries. In accordance with our law, we will leave him enough food and water for three days in hopes he will recover or another clan will find and care for him.”

“Kara, my healer said the boy has severe injuries and will need to be carried in order to travel. It will be more than three days before he will be able to care for himself and from what I’ve seen, there are not many travelers. To leave him is to condemn him to death.”

“It is the way of my people.”

“Can you not delay your departure until he can travel?”

“No, we must depart soon after the sun appears. The rest of our clan left ten days ahead of us bearing the supplies to build a new village. Our group is supposed to catch up and arrive at the location of the new village the same day they do. A three day delay would be unacceptable to my mate.”

“Your mate would have you sacrifice one of your people?”

“My mate has led these people since before ... before I joined them. It is his word that says the severely injured are to be left, and his word is our law.”

“We could take the injured boy with us and return him to you after he heals.”

“You may take him if you wish as a member of your clan, but do not try to return him. It is another of my mate’s laws. If he survives, he may visit us in his search for a mate, but he cannot rejoin our people.”

“I cannot say I agree with your laws, but we will abide by them. When we depart, we will take the boy with us. We will care for him and raise him as one of our own.”

She sighed and smiled. “I knew you would say that. I am sure you will teach him to be a good hunter and provider.” She reached into a small pouch and pulled out what looked like a rolled up leaf, which she stuck in her mouth. “Do you mind?” she asked, picking up a firebrand, “It’s a bad habit I picked up a long time ago.”

When I didn’t say anything, she applied the flame and inhaled deeply. When she exhaled I knew that it was not tobacco. She offered the joint to me but I declined.

“It doesn’t matter to me one way or the other, but Kenpo, my mate, would have you removed from the camp. I don’t know if you know it or not, but some of the clans would be very offended if you don’t partake of what they offer. You may not like some of the stuff, I know I don’t. Some of it can give you a headache or an upset stomach, but none of it will kill you. You better remember that if you plan to trade or make friends with the natives.”

“I’ll try to remember that.” I replied without thinking. Then it hit me what she had said. “What gave me away?”

“It wasn’t just one thing but a bunch of little things. The way you’re dressed could be taken as regional, same with the way you wear your hair. The way you talk is a big indicator, it’s too ... I don’t know. It’s like you took a French class in school and are trying to blend in on a trip to Paris. And the way you say your names - Ahn-dee, Em-lee, and Jah-nee - it sounds so forced. Just say your names normally. They could pass as native with a regional accent. Oh, and speaking of names,” she stuck out her hand, “I used to be Mary Murphy from Vermont, now I’m Karamaloka - ‘The girl who fell from the sky’. Kara for short.”

I shook her hand. “Andy Williams. Mary, you seem to have been here longer than we have. Do you know how you got here?”

“Call me Kara. I’m not really Mary anymore. Haven’t been for about fifteen years. As for how I got here, it was probably the same way you and those kids up in the cave did. I got in an accident and woke up here. I was lucky Kenpo found me and took me in. I lived with his family until I learned enough of the language to accept his mating proposal. It was years later that I found out that he had seen me appear and believed I was a gift sent by ‘those who watch over us’ to take the place of one of the three mates he had lost that season. Even though he has lost and replaced many mates since then, he tells me I am better than the three he lost combined. I do my best to never let him feel otherwise.”

I found it interesting that she, like Sheila and the Adams girls, had no recollection of anything between their accident and their arrival here. Is it possible that Aleria and her team didn’t have anything to do with their transfers? I thought it unwise to broach the subject with Kara without talking to Laarusk or Aleria about it first.

“It sounds like you were very lucky. Have you ever considered joining with others like us? You know, non-natives.”

“Why Andy,” she said with feigned shock, “are you asking me to join your clan?” She took a long hit on the joint and held the smoke for almost a minute before letting it out. “You know, when I first got here I would have given anything to meet a group like yours or the coach’s and been able to join them. Thing was, I never found any other groups. Individuals? Sure, but not often. And they all had attitudes like our friend up there. That coach is either going to wind up dead or the leader of a clan. I’m betting on the first. As for me now, after so many years, there is nothing that could make me leave my people. Kenpo and the others have been my family and friends since I arrived here and I could never willingly leave them.” She offered the joint to me again. When I refused, she shook her head then took one final hit and threw what was left into the fire. “I think I better get some sleep.” She looked at the sky, then the cave, and finally at the camp. “Tomorrow is going to be a long day. Goodnight, Andy. Maybe we’ll see each other in the morning.” As she turned to walk away, she looked back over her shoulder. “Andy, do me a favor. Don’t tell anyone about me, that I’m not from here.”

I left after saying goodnight to Kara and to Aldo as I passed him. He seemed pleased that I made the effort to speak to him. As I walked back to the area occupied by my people, I contacted Mali and asked her to let Aleria and Laarusk know I needed to talk with one or both of them as soon as possible.

As I approached our fire, I spotted my mates talking to several males a short distance away on the opposite side. Andrea saw me and signaled for me to keep back, so I joined the others. Keela was sitting by the fire keeping Sheila and the girls company. Keedo was asleep with his head in Keela’s lap. The new girls were obviously trying to talk with Keela but seemed frustrated at the lack of a common language. Keela looked relieved to see me.

“Andy! Why can these women not understand what I’m saying? They ask me questions but when I answer them they look like they don’t understand.”

I received pretty much the same thing from the new girls. “She acts like she understands us but when she talks it’s just gibberish. Now and then we catch a word, but none of the rest of it makes sense.”
