Pulling into the parking lot at the funeral parlor Dan could not help but notice the large amount of automobiles that were there. Fred was a successful and popular business man which Dan thought accounted for the large turnout at his wake.

Walking into the funeral parlor Dan signed the book and waited in line to express his condolences. He could see standing by the open casket was Fred’s wife Marilyn who Dan had met a few times. Standing next to her he assumed were her three daughters. Dan couldn’t help but think that the daughters resembled the mother with their dark hair and the black dresses they wore. There was however one exception and that was an attractive daughter who had short blond hair and was going against the mourning tradition by wearing a light colored dress. In observing her Dan couldn’t help but think she was somewhat of a rebel because of her appearance.

When it was Dan’s turn he expressed his condolences to Marilyn and the daughters. Marilyn thanked Dan for coming and introduced him to her daughters telling them that Dan and Fred were close friends and had taken some fishing trips together. The daughters were named Jennifer, Linda and the blond was Cindy. Jennifer remarked that Fred had talked about the good times he had on those fishing trips.

Dan left the wife and daughters in order for the other mourners to express their condolences and went into the lobby to say hello to some people he knew that were there. He wasn’t there long when Cindy, Fred’s daughter walked into the lobby and up to Dan. Besides his initial thoughts about her being a rebel he also thought she was good looking. She in her shoes stood about five foot ten inches tall and had a slim figure. Facially she was easy to look at and he would guess age wise was somewhere in her thirties maybe older as it was hard to tell.

She walked up to Dan again thanking him for coming. She said that she too had heard Fred talk about Dan and the fine time he had on those fishing trips and also golfing with Dan.

Dan remarked that he had gotten to be close friends with Fred. His passing was a shock and he will miss him. He said that Fred’s passing that had made up his mind for him and he had just taken early retirement because of it. He wanted to enjoy life before his time came. Cindy started to excuse herself to go back into the parlor and Dan told her that if he could be of any help for her to contact him. She thanked him for the offer.

About twenty minutes later Dan left the funeral parlor.

Later in the following week Dan received a phone call and was surprised to find that it was Cindy Rollins phoning him.

Cindy said, “Sorry to bother you but you did say to call if you could be of help.”

“Sure, what can I do to help?”

“Mother is hell bent to get rid of Fred’s trophy case which she never liked. She wants to pitch all of Fred’s trophies but I thought maybe something else could be done rather than throwing them in the trash.”

“Let me think... , I know Fred was selected the most valuable player when they won the State Football Championship. Is there a trophy for that?”

“Yes there is and a nice 8x10 picture of him holding that trophy.”

“Let me make a phone call and check on something and I will get back to you. Give me a phone number where I can reach you.”

Ending the call with Cindy, Dan looked up the phone number for the high school he and Fred went to and dialed that number. When it was answered he asked to be connected to the Athletic Director. The transfer was made and the call was answered with a man’s voice saying, “Jack Prendergast.”

Dan introduced himself and explained the reason he was calling. Dan wondered if the school would be interested in having Fred’s trophy and picture displayed in the school’s trophy case. Jack said it would make a good addition to their trophy case. Dan said he would deliver the trophy either today or tomorrow.

Dan called back Cindy and told her what he had arranged. She thought that was a great idea. Arrangements were made for Dan to go to her condo which was in a western suburb to pick up the trophy tomorrow. He was looking forward to meeting Cindy again as she was an attractive woman.

It was about eleven the next day when Dan pressed Cindy’s doorbell button. She answered the door and Dan was glad he was seeing her again. She invited Dan in and offered him a cup of coffee as well as pointing out the trophy and picture that were on her dining room table.

Dan looked at the trophy and picture and remarked that it would be a nice addition to the high school’s trophy case. He also accepted her offer of coffee.

Sitting at the kitchen table Dan remarked, “Off work today?”

“No but I don’t need to leave here till three.”

“What do you do?”

With a little surprised look on her face she said, “You don’t know?”

“No I am sorry but I don’t know, enlighten me.”

“I am a news anchor for the six and ten o’clock news.” She named the television station that she was on which was a local affiliate of a major cable news network.

“Oops, I am sorry but I don’t watch television that much and when I do it’s usually channel four that I watch for the news. Fred never did mention what you did for work and I guess he just assumed I knew. I will however watch you reporting the news from now on.”

That remark caused Cindy to laugh and she was even more attractive when she laughed. She in the short time he had met her seemed like a nice person and not one who was enamored with herself in being a television personality.

They talked for a while with both of them telling about what they did at or for work. Dan mentioned in the conversation that he was divorced. Cindy indicated that she was still single and while she dates she was not serious about anyone at this time.

After he finished his coffee Dan stood to leave. Cindy thanked him for taking care of the trophy and asked if there was anything she could do for him.

Dan said, “I enjoyed talking to you and if you don’t think I am too old for you will you let me take you to out to dinner?”

He could see that she was taken back a little by his request but she said, “No I don’t think you are too old for me. I do like dating older successful interesting men and it seems to me that you fall into that category. Does Saturday at six work for you?”

“Yes it does and I will be here. I will also start watching you doing the news tonight and from now on”

Cindy laughed was still smiling as Dan took the trophy and picture when he left her condo.

After dropping off the trophy and picture Dan couldn’t help but think a little about Cindy. She certainly was attractive and seemed like a nice person. That he didn’t know she was on television had him wondering if that was a plus or minus for him as far as she was concerned. He could only wait to see what would happen about him not knowing she was on television.

In watching both the six and ten news Dan couldn’t help but think Cindy was good in what she did. Not only did she give the appearance of being serious when she delivered the news she also seemed to be a warm and caring person as she reported the lighter side of the news. He would make it a point from now on to watch her reporting the news.

His pressing the doorbell button caused Cindy opened the door for him on Saturday. He could see she was wearing a dark blue dress which was a little above her knees and showed a little bit of cleavage. She looked damn good was the thought he had and he made an effort to tell her that she did. She blushed a little in hearing him complimenting her on her looks.

Instead of going to his country club he asked her if she had a preference for a restaurant and she mentioned a fish and steak restaurant that had recently received good reviews. A quick phone call Dan made secured a reservation. Cindy offered and Dan accepted a cocktail at her place before heading to the restaurant.

As they were walking to their table Dan noticed some diners that were there pointing out Cindy to their dining companions. Apparently a number of people do watch the news given at Cindy’s television station thought Dan.

Dining with Cindy was very nice as she was knowledgeable on many subjects. He knew that she was not just a pretty face newsreader. Cindy expressed some conservative opinions that she said she couldn’t voice on television which coincided with Dan’s opinions. There was some talk about Fred which had Dan tell her of some incidents that occurred with Fred when Dan was with him. They both agreed Fred was a good man.

Arriving back at her condo Cindy told Dan he didn’t need to get out of the car. She said she had a very nice time and enjoyed herself.

Dan said, “I hope I am not being presumptuous but would you like to go out to dinner with me next Saturday?”

With no hesitation on her part Cindy said, “It’s a date, call for me at six” and she leaned over to give Dan a kiss on his cheek.

On the drive home Dan had some carnal thoughts about Cindy and maybe some hopes and dreams. If nothing further developed in a relationship with her that was acceptable as she was just a pleasure to be with.

During the week Dan golfed twice. He also went and looked at three apartment buildings that were up for sale. For various reasons none of these buildings interested him in purchasing them. He thought Florida where he had personally purchased a number of properties in the past was where he would find better investment opportunities. Florida was overbuilt as to housing and it was a winter mecca for snowbirds. With Florida having no State income tax he should consider becoming a resident of Florida which would save him some tax money. Dan did own a condo there in the Sarasota area which is where he planned on spending the winters and maybe more time than that.
