This is the first of the Swarm Cycle stories, and, also the first one I have read. The universe it is set in was created from the outset to be a multi-author series.
I enjoyed the story, the plot was a little thin on detail but I would guess that it had to be in order to not "box in" other authors. It certainly set the stage which it was designed to do.
The premise is interesting, not unique in SciFy but certainly done with a unique twist or two here. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
The basic idea is Earth is in the path of a alien invasion, the rest of the 'civilised' universe can't bring themselves to fight, so they recruit us. Not wanting to unleash an even worse horror, they devise a way to weed out the undesirables via a series of tests resulting in a CAP score.
The higher the score the more partners you can choose to take with you as you evacuate earth and begin to ensure the survival of the race and ultimately, the universe.
