I don't typically like to review a story that has already been reviewed, but in this case, I could not resist!
Getting By is an incredible story with a complex vision of a possible future. One that is mostly positive but left reality intact. No spoilers, but I experienced a full range of emotions reading it, rage, love, sadness, happiness, loss and satisfaction.
The story follows the efforts of a small group of survivors of a world wide disaster as they struggle to survive and rebuild. Thankfully, they make it a priority not to repeat the mistakes of the previous civilization.
There are rich characters and a fantastic plot to enjoy. The story does contain references to some brutal events, handled well, but they are there. If you have a weak stomach I would suggest caution.
Enjoy! The story will make you think! (I hope).
Post apopoclypse. It could end anyway the author decides. This one ended well. We all want a happy ending but you have to remember, Life is NOT fair, and we all die. (I stole that from Lazlo Zalezac without permission.) This story is a LOGICAL study of what could happen with a group after the odiferous excrement strikes the oscillating air mover.
They struggle, they adapt, they overcome and they survive. They don't survive because it's handed to them, they survive because they worked hard and sweated and died as individual to allow the kick start of civilization to survive.
I have to say that it stands alone without need for explicit sex and there isn't a lot in here. If there are any technical problems spelling etc. they are few and far between. The plot and story line is good, fresh and consistant. Shakes does good work.
Don't pass this one up.
