This isn't a lesbian story, nor does Jane Urquhart identify it as such. But yep, it is FF, it is romantic, & I enjoyed it a lot. Vigorous, confident writing, which is probably gonna mean I'll want to read more Jane Urquhart stories, no matter how het, just for the pleasure of reading good writing.
Sex: The sex was okay, but didn't especially rock my boat. But you're reading a review by a dyke who does sex with other women with some regularity, & who reads a lot of lesbian erotica & porn besides. If female-with-female sex is less usual for you, it might turn your crank more.
Plot: Here's where this story especially excelled. The development of the relationship between the two women Janey & Taria was handled beautifully, with humor & tenderness both. Best I could tell, there some truth to the tale too, especially if you follow Janey's advice & look up friend Talia's "Phone Sex" story. (I couldn't find it on Storiesonline.com, but I did locate it in no time flat at alt.sex.stories.moderated -- a story of phone sex between these same two characters, also featuring a hilarious description of a woman's view of heterosexual tit-fucking.) And geez, the writing is just so confident & relaxed & clear. Great job.
Technical: No flaws that I noticed.
Lesbian quotient: I include this criteria in my reviews of FF stories, because as my reviewer profile states, that's my primary interest as a reviewer. This one falls somewhere in between: it's neither a dyke story, but nor is it really a heterosexual titillation story.
It strikes me rather as very very honest: the two women in the story are exactly as they say. They aren't lesbians, they aren't really even necessarily bisexual. They are friends, who have happened to fall in love. I'm surprised to find myself saying so, because the "I fucked a woman but I'm not a lesbian or even bi" thing is pretty anathema to a lot of dykes, strikes most of us as being a bunch of rationalizing hypocrisy.
But hold on: hasn't the last couple of decades in the history of sexual expression taught us a thing or two? Such as that sex & sexuality is a lot more plastic, a lot more flexible, than our boxes & categories will admit to?
So I welcome a new category to my categories of FF stories. I don't know quite what to call it, but I congratulate Janey & Taria on discovering that, even if you are "the hardest core heterosexual woman in the whole United States, and Canada," that you can still enjoy expressing your love for a female friend, sexually.
Appeal to me: As high as it can get, without being a dyke story. This is a terrific story. I highly recommend it.
