Right off the bat, I'm going to be clear that I'm not going to recommend that anyone read Phil Phantom's "Daughter in Heat," simply because I don't want that responsibility hanging over my head.

That having been said, I think any reasonably open-minded reader of erotica should read at least one Phil Phantom story in his or her lifetime. It will give you an idea of your personal limits. And "Daughter in Heat" is a good candidate, long enough to get the full effect of the author's ability to portray debauchery, but not nearly as long as the epic "See No Evil," a saga that will leave you seriously questioning the human spirit.

It's not that Phantom's writing is purely horrific; to the contrary, his stories are well written and flow so well that you don't realize how vile the proceedings are until you've already swallowed. A Phantom story is a parade of one-upmanships, as if he stopped at the end of writing each paragraph and asked himself "How much more extreme can I make it?" But at the same time, his stories can arouse, even as the reader is embarrassed or ashamed that it happened.

"Daughter in Heat" is essentially about a teenager who's been raised to be as big a slut as her mother (no small feat in this case) while her father has remained unaware, culminating with Heather's big "coming out" party in front of family and friends. But that's just a framework for a very large cast of characters to sink as low as they can go in the pursuit of perverse pleasure.

If all of this sounds like an indictment, it's not. We all know what we like, or how we're willing to have our boundaries tested, and it would be foolish to think of Phantom's legion of readers as soulless. In fact, the story is so extreme and presented in such an airy style that a lot of readers will read it as parody. Writers are always encouraged to "show, rather than tell," but this piece is about 80 percent "tell."

And readers who get to the final scenes thinking that there's no limit to how far the author will go will be surprised that even he has his limits.
