1: Magic by Lazlo Zalezac
This is a fantastic story. Lazlo writes beautifully, so the technical merit is a 10. He has captured my attention with a whole series of really quirky characters that keep my interest so that I always want to know what they are going to get up to next, and can never predict what that actually is!
2: Silver Wings by Joe J
Joe J is writing about what he knows in this story, and it comes through. There is a wealth of detail that someone not intimately involved with the SF community could possibly know. It is conveyed in a beautiful writing style that seduces you into an intimate look inside this young soldier's head; experiencing the character's training and deployment along with him. At the same time, you get to know and respect the love of his life: his wife. This story is still in progress, and I cannot wait for each chapter to come out. Well worth reading!
3: Second Age of Discovery: the Explorers by Futurist
This is classic sci-fi. It starts with an invention that is an extension of current technology and explores all the what-ifs. The story is well written and moves at a fast pace once the basic premise has been established. There are numerous interesting sub-plots that are used to great effect to expand on the basic story-line. This story is a really enjoyable read and is yet another where I wait impatiently for the latest chapter. Do yourself a favour and add it to your library!
4: New Friends by Halcyon
At first blush, this is your standard US High School drama. It quickly becomes apparent however, that it is a pleasingly different take on the standard plot, and a lot more interesting. The story explores his emotions as well as his actions, and gives some depth to what is often just an excuse for an extended self-masturbation fantasy on the part authors in this genre. The main characters come across as real people dealing with the issues in their lives: make no mistake, this is an idealistic fantasy, but it is possible to suspend your disbelief. (the hero gets beaten in a fight *gasp* *shock/horror*) One caveat: while the plot and characterisation are very good, the spelling, grammar and sentence structure are appalling. For this story however, it is worth the effort to read over these faults. I did, and I am glad I made that choice because the story is really that good. I look forward to more from this author, although I hope he engages an editor for his next attempt. BoonDock
5: The Defenceman by Cold Creek
Yet another coming of age story, but this one is developing very nicely, with a protaganist who is a really nice guy; humble and unassuming; kind and a little innocent. He is unaware of the extent of his talent at Hockey and doesn't see it to be as important as his academic scholarship. The girl next door just happens to have a twin sister ... this looks like it is going to be a good read, especially if the author gets an editor.
6: The Gamer's Girlfriend by Vanity Lamoureux
This is a delightful story. Well written, erotic and fun. definitely one to read. I look forward to more from this author.
7: Friday Night Lights by The Senator
this is a great story, well written, funny and a really nice take on the football hero at high-school genre. The hero is intelligent and self-effacing, a fairly reluctant football player who was actually more interested in the band. The characters ring a lot truer than is usual in this genre. While there is a little more maturity than one would expect, it is plausibly explained by the circumstances. I have found this to be an easy, pleasant read, with nothing that has jarred me out of my suspension of disbelief. I look forward to more from this author, both on this story and any more he cares to write! go read the story and email the author to encourage him to write more...
8: Beating Off Bob's Guide to Writing Really Bad Erotica by Beating Off Bob
This is a brilliant piece of writing. Tongue firmly in cheek, Beating off Bob aka lubrican, illustrates the ridiculous nature of online porn. A must read for writers, and wannabe writers, of erotica.
9: A Good Man by Marc Nobbs
It's a great story.
10: Coming From Behind by Coaster2
Another sports story! This time it's golf. It's a very well written story, with a likable protaganist, and a romantic relationship. I look forward to reading more as is develops.
11: Béla Book 1: Target Girl by Dank
Brilliant story. This is the best vampire origins story I have ever read. Make Sure you have a strong stomach before tackling it though.
12: A Toast in an Empty Bar by Jay Cantrell
Expect tears. Beautiful. Inspiring.
13: Island Mine by Refusenik
This is the best, by far, story in this sub-genre that I have ever read! Well written with a well concieved plot, it is a pleasure and joy to read.
14: Human Phoenix by Refusenik
This is a brilliant story. Well written, it engages your interest from the first paragraph. The story is on the surface a coming of age one, but there is the constant tension under the surface which keeps hinting at the more unusual. I cannot wait to read more about the main character in the sequel.
15: The Hermit of Scarecrow Valley by Lubrican
I absolutely love this story. For the obvious reasons of course.. disabled Vet gets involved with beautiful women.... But more than that this is a charming story. His bashful inexperienced approach to things etc
16: Flight of the Code Monkey by Kid Wigger
Brilliant story. Great plot and wonderful characterisations.
17: Can You See Me Now? by Lubrican
It's just brilliant. Wonderfully conceptualized and beautifully written.
