And half-a-crown makes absolutely nothing to anyone who didn't watch UK commercial TV in the 60s.

AFAIK, the advert hasn't been shown this century. But the product is still available and I've heard young kids say the catchphrase. It seems to have made its way into popular culture.

I wonder what historians will make of it in a century or two's time.

I am glad you added that bit, because I had never heard of the 40,001 advert, but then I don't think my family ever watched ITV back then.
(Was it known as ITV or Channel 9 in those days?)

ITV.

Channel 9 was Antipodean. I first heard of it when Kerry Packer started an independent cricket test organisation and got a lot of players banned by their countries.

(And the slogan was "One thousand and one." I'd like to blame inflation.)

The Legend of Floppy Milkbags by Steven Seven

I worked that out. Somehow it would be more fitting if the title had some gravitas so I was reluctant to name it.

I'm not going to read it because of the scat tag. It's not a squick - I've proofed and edited enough stories including that tag - it's just not of personal interest.

I've read some of the author's blogs and he has a good command of English so I would expect the story's technical quality to be better than the score suggests.

The scat tag is virtually a guarantee your score will drop significantly, as well as keeping plenty of readers away.

Maybe when we reach 49,999, Lazeez can make a general announcement and it'll be a race to see who's the first to submit a one-page short story to win the big 50K grand prize! 'D

How would that work? The moderators publish bundles of stories at the same time so they'd influence what would become the 50,000th story.

Duh! I was teasing. I didn't think a suggestion that silly needed yet another smiley face.

And I bet that number does NOT include stories that have been deleted over the years.

If the site's engine worked like almost every other story site out there, and counted each chapter/part as a story like they count, then we would have now reached 159,752 stories (not including the 'jokes and giggles' parts) :)

Maybe it would help market the site if you changed the announcement to "### complete stories" or "### separate stories" so readers don't confuse it for 'independent posts' like ASSTR does.
