You know, I'm ashamed to admit that thought never crossed my mind. I guess I am so worried about being one of those obnoxious demanding readers that authors complain about that I bend over backwards to not appear that way.

Don't worry, if he's stuck and unable to make any progress, he'll let you know (in generally grumpy terms). But, at the very least, you can mark him off the dreaded 'did they die?' list.
