It begins with a young man on a field trip to a museum, where he steps outside and trips and hits his head and his body is then inhabited by a wizard who was trying to escape his death. I've been looking for this story for a while, and any help is appreciated. Thanks!
I've read it but am drawing a total blank on title or author. IIRC, the wizard/mage was only an apprentice himself and barely got his spirit placed inside a small statue before the enemy soldiers arrived. The young man fell into a pool in the museum courtyard, hit his head and essentially drowned. That is what gave the mage spirit a chance to escape the statue.
