I have been looking for this story forever aswell. The MC created a shelter in a cave and once his people emerge, they battle for control of the country side. They get into military storages and become the new government in the area where the u.s. is now.

A better way (because you can limit it to just the story of interest) is usually to do a (quick) search (from the home page); if this returns just one result, then copy the 'sort by title' link.
If there's more than one title match, the author can be manually added to the search: sort by author, then edit the last two clauses 'sf=author_name&so=asc' to be 'author=', where is the author name with any spaces replaced by + and other special characters replaced by _ e.g.:

I don't think your solution is something I would use, but, it's still possible for anyone to try that. And I can see that it could be good, but I do what is easy for me and beneficial for the reader.
