Slim chance

mradam

I have had a scene from a story in my head for ages and I'm not sure where its from (online, book, tv, film or my own dreams).

A guy is depressed about something (I think he'd just been dumped) and he pours himself a drink. His best friend's younger sister catches him and starts shouting at him because he's allergic to alcohol.

That's the only thing I can remember.

Sounds familiar, but like you, I can't remember why (i.e. where I might have seen it before).

Its one of the peculiarities of American English that slim chance and fat chance are pretty much the same thing.

The only difference between the two is Type II diabetes.

Given that both comments are slang, and that slang tends to use sarcastic or ironic word choice, I'd say that it's a peculiarity of slang not of English. Unfortunately, I don't speak any other languages fluently enough to say for sure, but I suspect that the tendency towards using sarcastic slang is probably universal, at least with those languages which have loose enough grammar to allow it.

Isn't Slim Chance a tall and thin cowboy from Texas?

I've always like Slim Chance stories, or is that 'stories with a Slim Chance of ever being made into terrible action movies'?
