I got a request from a "Lady Riding Atop" reader to visit Shepherd's Crook and expand on the coming of age rituals explored in chapter 4. I think it would be a lot of fun to write a story set at Shepherd's Crook and I think it will be an interesting challenge as a writer. Unfortunately, it will be a while before the series progresses to that point. However, as a thank you to the readers interested in that fun, and as a challenge to myself, I wrote a short story about Brook Singing, the young girl from Shepherd's Crook. I hope you like this preview of things that might come.
I'm proud of my work in "Brook Singing." I tried it as a linear narrative, but that was tedious. So, I stretched myself as a writer and found a structure that allows me to focus on Brook's experience without retelling significant parts of "Lady." I also got to take the Shepherd's Crook dialect and mindset for a real spin, confirming that I could write them for a longer story.
Please let me know what you think. If there are aspects that don't read well, or would be hard to follow in a longer story, let me know. If there are aspects that work well, please let me know that as well. Feedback is always welcome.
I have some good news I'd like to share. I'm about 30,000 words into the first Light of Passion novel. An older Ashley is faced with investigating and stopping a rash of shadow-related deaths. I hear our favorite demoness will stop by to "help out," and somewhere along the way, Ashley hopes to find a kindred spirit and build a life together.
I'm filled with joy watching the Light of Passion universe come together. Villages and noble houses are developing character. I start to understand the society. The basic premis of the universe affects a lot: even finding a way to curse effectively took some cleverness. The pattern of the year, the calendar, and the beginnings of legal principles are just around the corner. I can't wait to see what you think.
However, it's going to be a while before I can finish that story. Also, I'm not 100% sure of the ordering of the series. I'd like this next story to come before Shepherd Girl's Price, but I'm not sure that will work for the characters. So, it's possible that I'll need to write both stories before I can release either. I hope to avoid that, because I'm really excited about what I have and I'd love to share that with others.
Please get in touch and let me know what you think. Thanks for all your support both in the form of votes and of contact.
