I am a pacifist--almost in extreme. I hate war. I hate violence in nearly all its manifestations. Yet I have a profound respect for those men and women who have served their country, sometimes to the end of their lives. If you are a veteran or are in active service or have a son or daughter in the service or a friend or other relative, I thank you for serving your country. In the words of President Wilson in proclaiming Armistice Day in 1918:
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."
