Not knowing a damn thing about New Zealand money I started tracing links and found a government site. The wages I used were the national minimum wage per week by law. It doesn't sound like a lot. But David and Grace were providing everything…100 years before in 1860 a butler was £30 a year and a highly trained and competent maid earned £12 a year…paid at the end of a complete year. A tweenie could be had for £3 for the year but the money went to her mother. For a Maori, in 1960, £9.17.6 a week was an enormous wage. By 1964, things were beginning to change…but that's not in our brief.
