This week with Arlene and Jeff:
..."Lieutenant, I have made an adaptation to your ship's communicator. You may speak to your AI, and it will communicate with me, but as I have mentioned before, once past the outer boundaries of this star system, we will not be able to communicate effectively. Thought, even amplified, will not span the distance involved, therefore…" The Ship hesitated, allowing Ann to finish.
"I'll be on my own."
"I must remind you that you have pledged that you will use the utmost caution. To use a human term, this is a fact finding mission. You will be in the most advanced scout ship I have been able to devise. If you utilize the knowledge you have learned while at the Academy, and operate within the boundaries of your ship's capabilities, you should go undetected. However, if you are detected, I think your ship will have the speed to outrun most any vessel that you might encounter, except a true fighter. But even then, you will probably have a greater range, and with any appreciable distance between yourself and your foe, your stealth capabilities should get you out of trouble.
"I have been studying your history. There is another adage coined by your Harry Copland that tends to fit the occasion. 'There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots.' I suggest that you keep that firmly in mind. We have discussed this before, but again…"
"I promise. I'll be careful and I'll do my absolute best to keep risks to a minimum. Trust me; meeting that fighter made a believer out of me. I know that luck played a major role in my survival. I'm not going to test that luck on this mission. I'm already scared, and I haven't even gotten onboard yet."..
Have a goodun;
