This week with Arlene and Jeff:

...What if those pulses are from a warp drive? Ship said a normally functioning warp drive could only be detected out to about a light minute, and that this pulse seemed wrong. What if it does come from a ship? Maybe a ship with a drive different from any that Ship is aware of? Her race apparently sat on its collective butt until the race that attacked had the advantage. We need to know what's going on out there. We don't need to wait until whatever this is comes calling. Ship has already said that AI's are logical and function better in combat with a live commander. She also thinks that a human commander will be even better than the master's commanders. She claims that humans are hard to predict; that, if we have a fault, we act too quickly. But her masters sat on their butts until the battle was well on its way to being lost.

The young woman sat thinking for a long time. I know that Jeff is chomping at the bit, to use another of his olden terms that he likes to keep alive, to go see what's out there, but Ship would never let her commander go out by himself, and she can't leave Earth, her Prime and his family unprotected. But in the overall scheme of things, I'm insignificant - and I'm trained...

Have a goodun;
