Holding our breath

Okay. If you read the previous blog entry, then you know about the problem I've been grappling with.

Now, I get it that free is nice. I really do. When I first joined SOL it was with the basic free membership. And nobody wants to pay for something they can get for free.

Of course, in the marketplace, if everything is free, then nobody has the motivation to make anything. Except for fun. And that's what I've been doing since 2005.

SOL is just like any other product. It costs to produce. And if the bills don't get paid, then it goes away. That's just simple economics. We'd love it if everything was free, but that's unsustainable.

On the other hand, we're family. So what can be done?

Well, to start things off, we're going to try something and see if it can work. We don't know if it will work or not, but we hope so. And if it doesn't, then we'll have to try something else. But let's give this first try a chance.

Here's how it works.

The 70 stories mentioned in my last blog entry will be moved into the premier members area, in terms of their entirety. Premier members will be able to read them completely. That helps SOL, and paying the bills.

They're going to share some of that with me. In other words, it's sort of like I'm now part of the bills SOL is paying. It isn't much, so trust me when I say that just removing them completely and selling them on line would make me more. But that's okay. Hopefully, when people find SOL because of a Google search, they'll realize what a great deal it is to get access to over 70 of my books plus a thousand times that much great writing for the price of membership.

And everybody can preview those books, reading the first few chapters. At that point they are given the opportunity to buy a premier membership, or click a link to just go buy the book at Smashwords.com. We hope that, too, will generate some revenue for either/or both of us.

But not everyone can afford a premier membership. I know that. So for those folks, I'm going to leave two thirds of my output in the non-exclusive area, where anybody can access it still completely free.

Granted, most of my best stuff will be for sale. But please take note of that little word "most." I'm still leaving some of my best work out there for free. Among them are the entire Bobby Dalton series, and Prick Van Winkle, and Flossie's Revenge and a number of other books of which I am very proud.

So we all lose a little something, and gain a little something. Hopefully, that will work out for everybody.

Thanks for your support. Your "cards and letters" have been wonderful.

But most of all ... thanks for reading.

Bob
