I've had a succession of emails quoting 'Red, Right. Returning' as the mnemonic for pilotage. While there is an international standard for buoyage - red buoys to port or left, green ones to the starboard or right, the direction of buoyage differs between America and Europe, which I wasn't aware of before. So now we know. In Europe, where my stories are based, or have been so far, "Direction of buoyage in estuaries and port approaches is generally from seaward".
