Unexpected Valentine

My story "Unexpected Valentine" came in 2nd place in the Valentine's Day contest (always the bridesmaid). https://storiesonline.net/s/30342/unexpected-valentine

Since it finished in the top 3, it will remain in the Premier section for 6 months. If you have a Premier membership, you can read it now. If not, you'll have to wait until it's released into the free area.

I had planned to post the next chapter of "The Nymphomaniac" today, but I have a lot going on so I doubt I will be able. I'll try tomorrow morning, but I have my annual physical in the morning and my doctor is a 45 minute to 1 hour drive depending on traffic so it depends on how early I wake up.

SOL votes and Bookapy reviews

People seem to vote on SOL stories more than they give reviews on Bookapy. I'm not surprised about that. Or maybe it's not true if you consider the percentage of people who can vote/review it. There are considerably more readers for SOL stories so you would expect more votes.

I was wondering about a unique situation, like with my latest novel, "The Nymphomaniac." I published the novel on Bookapy, but then decided to post a chapter a week on SOL. People have given it reviews on Bookapy and others have voted on it on SOL.

What I was wondering is, if someone starts the novel on SOL and then buys it on Bookapy, when they finish the novel do they go back to SOL and vote on it? Even if they give it a review on Bookapy, would they go back to SOL and give it a score there?

I guess those are rhetorical questions. I'm not really expecting an answer. Thinking about it just kept me up last night. LOL

Btw, I've been posting the chapters to "The Nymphomaniac," Monday or Tuesday mornings, but since I went bowling Tuesday morning I didn't get to post the latest chapter until Tuesday afternoon (my time). Just thought I'd mention that.

Why I didn't use the "slow" tag

With the first 6 chapters of "The Nymphomaniac" posted on SOL, all of the complete chapters you are able to read as a sample on Bookapy are now on SOL. Part of Chapter 7 is in the Bookapy sample, but the full chapter will be posted on SOL after this weekend.

Now that you're into the story, you may be wondering where the sex is. If I followed the literal definition of SOL's story codes, I should have included the "slow" tag. But I hate that code. I hope you agree the story isn't slow. The slow tag in SOL means there's a lot of story before the sex occurs which is the case in this story.

However, I think that code applies to sex stories. This is a story that contains sex. To me, there's a difference.

I talk about chapter length a lot because my chapter lengths seem to be contrary to the norm on SOL. As I've said many times, I prefer short chapters both as a reader and author.

Like I often do, I was spending time browsing articles on writing fiction and came upon one on chapter length from "Publishers Weekly."

"Publishers Weekly" is an American weekly trade news magazine targeted at publishers, librarians, booksellers, and literary agents. Published continuously since 1872, it has carried the tagline, "The International News Magazine of Book Publishing and Bookselling."

The following is from the article:

"Many novelists these days prefer chapters that are between 1,500 words—or six book pages— and 8,000 words, or 32 book pages."

My latest novel, "The Nymphomaniac," is 193,000 words and 70 chapters. That's an average chapter length of 2,757 words. So my chapters are on the shorter end, but not unusually short per the definition above.

The article also says:

"Chapter length helps create the rhythm of your book. Do you want your novel to feel fast paced and breathless? Then you should try to keep chapters on the short side. If your story is more leisurely, then longer chapters may be appropriate."

My writing is influenced by thrillers. Yeah, those novels that are "fast paced and breathless." So it makes sense for me to have shorter (not short—LOL) chapters.

Anyway, Happy Holidays to you all.

Trick reading chapters before posted

I'm posting a chapter a week on SOL for my novel "The Nymphomaniac." So far I've posted 3 chapters. Chapter 4 will be posted next week.

It just dawned on me that you don't have to wait for the next few chapters to be posted. The novel is for sale on Bookapy and Bookapy has a feature to sample the novel. So if you go to the novel on Bookapy (https://bookapy.com/s/635/the-nymphomaniac) and click "Read Sample," you will get more chapters than currently posted on SOL.

The sample is only chapters 1–6 with part of Chapter 7, but I won't be posting Chapter 6 for another 2 1/2 weeks. My download counts will go down, but I don't care about counts. All I care about is giving you the best story I can.

If you decide to read the sample chapters on Bookapy, I suggest you start from Chapter 1 even if you've read it. I didn't write the novel to be read a chapter a week and it will flow much better if you don't have to wait a week to read the next chapter.

Or, if you prefer reading a chapter a week, Chapter 4 will be posted this coming Monday or Tuesday depending on my schedule.
